В молодости работал (по его словам) тайным агентом ЦРУ в Германии, Италии и Югославии. В начале семидесятых его имя стало известным среди любителей генеративно-трансформационной грамматики, восходящей к Ноаму Хомскому — опубликовал в соавторстве с Ричардом Бэндлером книгу «Структура магии.
