В лицее его одноклассниками были Марсель Паньоль и Альбер Коэн. После получения среднего образования в Коллеже Шампите в Швейцарии изучал право в Университете Экс-ан-Прованс. С 1920 по 1924 год работал адвокатом в Марселе; потом оставил юридическую карьеру, чтобы заняться литературой. Марсель Брион в течение двадцати лет руководил отделом иностранной литературы французской ежедневной газеты «Le Monde» в Париже. Он помог известным европейским авторам, таким как Райнер Мария Рильке, Джеймс Джойс и Дино Буццати, приблизиться к французской публике.
