Call for help

Dear colleague, it looks as if we need your help. There's a request for deletion for the article Ибрагим яжи and the main point of discussion is that this person is claimed to be the first performer of classical music being of Sudanese origin. It is said that this source could prove this claim, but none of us could check if it is right as far as none of us could read in Arabic. Would you be so kind to read the source, find some mention of Ibrahim Yaji's priority in it and give Russian or English translation of the relevant quotation? Dear colleague, many thanks for your instant reply. But what's about this link exactly: 2006 - it looks as something like a review of Ibrahim Yaji's concert? Is there any clear information about the musician? Андрей Романенко 01:17, 29 апреля 2009 (UTC)[ответить]
Здравствуйте! Ну, хорошо, или не хорошо (?)...
Many thanks to you for your confidence and, please, excuse me for using English here. I saw that the English article about Ибрагим Яжи  is tagged with the same doubts, and some more, still.
Я не знаю всё о Г-н Аль-яжи, но —
  • It's “somewhat” difficult to find something which could be undoubtedly reliable about this musician, not least if you try — hard, as I did it (with very few results) — to look for him on websites like Sudanese Online, a non-governmental source (there are too much opponents who speak freely). One of the problems is that this site is very active, and that I do not know how much neutral any of the moderators are;
  • What I found at first was absolutely nothing, then — after “a couple” of minutes — nothing but uninteresting, personal point of views, like this: Re: (Re: Mutwali Malik);
  • But eventually, there was this, from ТВ-новости (США) / RT  : a video interview featuring , in Arabic. Not much, actually, but it was a good start and it gives some hints.

For the time being, I have found sparse consistent information, but I have reasons to believe this is true. For this and the fact that this is a very rare occasion to speak about Sudanese people in a more interesting way than writing about those who share the “ideology” and manners of their leader(s), I guess it would be an error to delete this article, either on the English Wikipedia or on the Russian one. I saw that the Russian and English articles are an autobiography (but: who really cares about him in the US and elsewhere and, then, who else would have written something about him??). I do not like autobiographies here, but there are some other examples on the whole of the Wikipedias, and it seems to me that it is better to check, rewrite and do everything necessary to give a balanced article than simply discard it.

What I'm going to do now is:

It's the best I can do. It could take some time, but I will tell you as soon as I know more.
In the meantime, could you please ask those who are demanding speedy deletion  (both on the Russian and the English Wikipedias) to wait until I get more, and that they think about what I said above (editing etc.)? Furthermore, and though I'm not Calimero, I find it «so unjust» to get rid of an article about an African piano player, simply because no one cares about some of the objections I expressed.

I was asked by Andrej to help with the translation of the Arabic link.
Hello Andrej,
I read most of the link in Arabic: they praise him as a very talented young Sudanese musician, who astonishes all his listeners. He was giving a concert in Moscow when he was 21 (this is how the article starts), and the Sudanese Ambassador and their cultural attache also attended the concert. Yaji played piano pieces by Scriabin as well as by Chopin.
Ibrahim Yaji was born in Khartoum in 1984, started playing the piano when he was nine years old (having a Russian music teacher); 12 year-old, he won a prize in an international music competition in the Italian city of Ragusa. When he was 15 years old, he graduated the Arab Institute of Music in Damascus. In the year 2000, he joined the Moscow School of Music, and in 2002 he participated a music competition during which he won a diploma. Currently he is a third-year student at the Moscow School of Music and Singing (I don't know the exact name of the institution, I tried to translate it as accurately as possible from the Arabic original). Hope this helps. Best regards, Сердечное приветствие Eldad 21:23, 29 апреля 2009 (UTC)[ответить]
К сожалению…
Hi, Andrej, and sorry for the time it took to have full, reliable answers from specialists. Unfortunately, what I got is roughly the same RedAndr and others wrote there (at the top of this talk) and in other parts of this section. Though Ibrahim is quite upset, he is a “beginner”, he does not have enough PRESS articles about him and not enough performances to have articles. And, by the way, it seems that the English article has been deleted, too, probably for the same reasons.
До свидания. Посмотрите вас позже! — быстрокрылая ворона 10:01, 13 мая 2009 (UTC)[ответить]
