Handbook of the Birds of the World - многотомный справочник по всем живущим в настоящее время видам птиц. Справочник выпускался с 1992 по 2014 годы издательством Lynx Edicions в Барселоне под редакцией J. del Hoyo, A. Elliott, J. Sargatal и других. Он включает 16 томов и дополнительный выпуск по недавно открытым видам птиц.

На основе справочника, совместно с Birdlife International, был выпущен двухтомный определитель птиц. Позднее была открыта онлайн-версия издания, содержащая справочные статьи с обновляемой информацией, в том числе по систематике, и полностью доступная только по подписке.

Исторический очерк

В начале 1980-х годов Josep del Hoyo посетил 15 стран Африки имея при себе фотоаппарат и около 20 книг по орнитологии. Он не смог идентифицировать всех сфотографированных птиц с помощью этих книг и был удивлён, что полного справочника нет ни на немецком, ни на английском языках. Для подготовки такого справочника Josep del Hoyo собрал более сотни книг по орнитологии. Он встретился с известным каталонским орнитологом Jordi Sargatal, филантропом Ramon Mascort и шотландским орнитологом Andrew Elliott. В начале 1990-х годов Josep del Hoyo выпустил несколько книг по орнитологии чтобы набить руку[1].

Чтобы увеличить аудиторию было решено писать справочник на английском. Первый том подготавливался в ночное время на дому, так как Josep del Hoyo вёл еженедельную медицинскую программу на каталонском телевидении. У этого тома, выпущенного в 1992 году, поначалу было продано три тысячи экземляров, чего было недостаточно чтобы окупить работу. Однако второй том, который вышел в 1994 году тиражом шесть тысяч экземпляров, сделал издание окупаемым. По данным 2010 года первоначальный тираж свежих томов составляет более десяти тысяч экземпляров, а у первого тома было продано более 19 тысяч копий. Цена каждого тома превышает 200 евро[1].

В подготовке издания участвовало более тысячи орнитологов, художников, фотографов[1].

This volume was published in 1992. Unlike subsequent volumes, it does not have an introductory essay; instead, it has a 38-page overview by Eduardo de Juana of the biology of birds and a foreword welcoming the HBW project, by Christoph Imboden. Groups covered in this volume are as follows:

Special Volume:New Species and Global Index

This volume was published in July 2013. It includes a comprehensive introduction by Jon Fjelds on changes in bird macrosystematics and a foreword on the history of BirdLife International. It covers 84 new species published more recently than their corresponding HBW volumes, including 15 scientific descriptions of newly discovered Amazonian birds.

HBW and BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World, Volume 1: Non-passerines

This volume was published in July 2014. It depicts all non-passerines with drawings and maps, including all extinct species since the year 1500.

HBW and BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World, Volume 2: Passerines

This volume was published in December 2016. It depicts all passerines with drawings and maps, including all extinct species since the year 1500.
