Ãèñòîíû èãðàþò âàæíåéøóþ ðîëü â ðåãóëÿöèè òðàíñêðèïöèè, êëåòî÷íîãî öèêëà è ñîáûòèé ðàçâèòèÿ. Àöåòèëèðîâàíèå/äåàöåòèëèðîâàíèå ãèñòîíîâ èçìåíÿåò õðîìîñîìíóþ ñòðóêòóðó è âëèÿåò íà äîñòóï ôàêòîðîâ òðàíñêðèïöèè ê ÄÍÊ. Áåëîê, êîäèðóåìûé ýòèì ãåíîì ïðèíàäëåæèò ê êëàññó II ñåìåéñòâà ãèñòîíäåçàöåòèëàçû/acuc/Apha. Îí îáëàäàåò ñïîñîáíîñòüþ ãèñòîíäåàöåòèëàçû ê ïîäàâëåíèþ òðàíñêðèïöèè, êîãäà ñâÿçàí ñ ïðîìîòîðîì. Îí òàêæå âçàèìîäåéñòâóåò ñ ìèîöèòàðíûì óñèëèòåëüíûì ôàêòîðîì-2 (MEF2) áåëêîâ, ÷òî ïðèâîäèò ê ðåïðåññèè MEF2-çàâèñèìûõ ãåíîâ. Ýòè ãåíû, êàê ïîëàãàþò, ñâÿçàíû ñ ðàêîì òîëñòîé êèøêè. HDAC5 ó÷àñòâóåò â êîíñîëèäàöèè ïàìÿòè è ïðåäïîëàãàåò, ÷òî ïðè ðàçðàáîòêå èíãèáèòîðîâ HDAC[àíãë.] ñ áîëüøåé ñåëåêòèâíîñòüþ äëÿ ëå÷åíèÿ áîëåçíè Àëüöãåéìåðà, ñëåäóåò èçáåãàòü îðèåíòàöèè íà HDAC5[9].
