Автор монографии «Дитя Кали: мистическое и эротическое в жизни и учениях Рамакришны[англ.]» (1995; второе исправленное и дополненное издание вышло в 1998 году), за которую в том же году получил «Премию по истории религии за лучшую первую книгу» Американской академии религии[3]. Один из авторов The Encyclopedia of Religion[итал.] и The Encyclopedia of Hinduism. В 1987 году получил магистра гуманитарных наук по религиоведению в Чикагском университете и в 1993 году там же доктора философии по истории религии. С 2004 года — профессор и заведующий имени Ньютона Райзора кафедрой философии и религиозной мысли Университета Райса. Ранее преподавал в Вестминстерском колледже[англ.], Гарвардской школе богословия Гарвардского университета, Институте Эсален и Колорадском университете.
