Хентофф был обозревателем The Village Voice с 1958 по 2009 год. После своего ухода оттуда Хентофф стал старшим научным сотрудником в Институте Катона и продолжал вести свою музыкальную колонку для The Wall Street Journal, где публиковались его статьи до самой его смерти. Он часто писал по вопросам Первой поправки, а также был сторонником свободной прессе. Хентофф ранее был обозревателем в таких изданиях как Down Beat, JazzTimes, Legal Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, The Progressive, Editor & Publisher и Free Inquiry.
