TULP1 ÿâëÿåòñÿ ÷ëåíîì ñåìüè TUBBY-îáðàçíûõ ãåíîâ(TULPs), êîòîðûå êîäèðóþò áåëêè ñ íåèçâåñòíîé ôóíêöèåé. Ïðåäñòàâèòåëè ýòîãî ñåìåéñòâà áûëè èäåíòèôèöèðîâàíû â ðàñòåíèÿõ, ïîçâîíî÷íûõ è áåñïîçâîíî÷íûõ. Áåëêàì TULP äîñòóïíî â êîíñåðâàòèâíîé Ñ-òåðìèíàëüíîé îáëàñòè ïðèìåðíî 200 àìèíîêèñëîòíûõ îñòàòêîâ.
TULP1 ÿâëÿåòñÿ ãåíîì-êàíäèäàòîì äëÿ ïèãìåíòíîãî ðåòèíèòà-14 (RP). Ìóòàöèÿ â TULP1 ÿâëÿåòñÿ ðåäêîé ïðè÷èíîé ðåöåññèâíîãî RP.
TULP1 èãðàåò âàæíóþ ðîëü â ôèçèîëîãèè ôîòîðåöåïòîðîâ. [3]
